John Deal, Director, is responsible for the overall management of Eastbourne Search and Ideal Pens & Promotions. His background is in advertising, sales and marketing and he especially enjoys the sales part of the business. He routinely plays tennis, mountainbikes, swims and enjoys the odd game of golf and time with his family.
Cathy Deal, Director. Prior to forming Eastbourne Search in 1980, Cathy worked as a law clerk. These days her work includes a hands-on role alongside staff, Court searching and reporting to legal clients, land information searching, client liaison and assisting John. Interests are time with family and friends, a good autobiography, music, gardening, walking and enjoying her grandchildren.
Becka Moore has been with the firm since 2006. She conducts Court searches and reports to legal clients, land information searching and manages Ideal Pens & Promotions. She enjoys swimming, reading, arts and crafts, baking and cake decorating, travelling with her husband and is a keen movie buff.
Anna Deal has been with us since 2013. Her role is land information searching, MYOB account payments, inputting and quality control, client liaison and office administration. She enjoys travelling, the gym and spending time with family and friends.
Charmaine MacGregor joined us in 2014 part time. Her role is MYOB accounts inputting and general office duties. She enjoys walking her dog, cooking, crafts, travel and sport much to her husband's delight.


In 1980 when the company was incorporated, Cathy ran the business solely as a freelance law clerk after working 3 years for a Lower Hutt law firm. John joined her in 1985 in a marketing role as he saw the business growth for firms, especially smaller law firms, to outsource duties that a law clerk would usually perform ie. searching land titles and relating documentation, filing legal documents at the Courts, Companies Office searching and property settlements. Publicly available legal information from the Wellington Land Titles Office, Companies office and Law courts was researched then copied from paper records. While conducting property settlements, she built up a long standing rapport with Wellington lawyers, attending their offices often with a bag full of files, cheques and keys. The information, files and keys were delivered back to each lawyer's office in Lower Hutt by hand at the end of the day. It was very time consuming.

These days the information is electronic and our business is two-fold; [1] providing record of title and interest searches to the real estate profession and other interested parties [2] reporting to lawyers as part of their due diligence ie reporting on case proceeding information from the High, Supreme, Appeal, Environment, Employment (includes ERA) and District courts.

The change in technology has enabled our business to provide real-time information nationwide with a personal service by our long standing team with John and Cathy as hands-on owner operators. We pride ourselves on being a boutique agency providing excellent communication with a professional, confidential service. Most work comes from referrals which is a testament to the long standing reputation our company has built up since 1980.

Why is it so important to search the Record of Title and registered interests ?

In recent times it has become extremely important to conduct your due diligence when buying, selling or investing in real estate .This is so you know exactly who owns the property, if there are any covenants, easements, caveats or other restrictions on the title and you confirm the correct legal description ie lot and DP number and the area. We do not personally interpret the title or interest documents, you need a lawyer for this. It is interesting to note that the Real Estate Agents Authority suggests "a licensee needs to establish whether or not there are interests registered on the title such as covenants, caveats, easements, drainage rights etc that should be brought to the attention of interested parties." This shows the importance of searching the Record of Title and interests.

Our fees are very competitive. Special fees for multiple branch clients. POA . As you are not tied into a contract, there is no minimal monthly charge and no upfront or hidden costs. Complex, lengthy searches will incur a time and attendance fee which will be discussed on receipt of the request or following a preliminary search. Invoices/ Statements are generated monthly.
